Autologous transplantation is being performed in unilateral limbal stem cell deficiency, whereas homologous limbal transplantation could be used in severe bilateral cases. This might be taken from a living relative with appropriate HLA match or cadaver donor. The disadvantage of this method is the requirement for systemic immunosupressive therapy. Furthermore, amniotic membrane transplantation may be used associated with this procedure in cases of subconjunctival fibrosis or chronic inflammatory damage. In the last years the transplantation of expanded limbal stem cells on amniotic membrane is under investigation with favourable results. Keywords: Corneal surface disorders, Limbal epithelium, Limbal stem cell transplantation, Amniotic membraneTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2004, 13:104-108
