Göz Kliniği, ANKARA To investigate the structure of the opacities seen in two patients' hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), which was equiped with energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis system.
We present two pseudophacic patients whose hydrophilic acrylic lenses opacified some years after phacoemulsification surgery. Both patients' IOLs were explanted and exchanged for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) IOLs. The explanted IOLs were analysed with SEM.
It was found that the opacities consisted of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, silicon polymers, sodium, carbon and oxygen. Silicon polymers, sodium, carbon and oxygen were detected also at the clear zone of the IOLs. However, the amount of silicon polymers was more in the opacities than in the clear zone.
The opacities within the hydrophilic acrylic IOLs were located at regions where the silicon polymer levels were high. Keywords: Foldable hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens, Scanning electron microscope, Opacities
