Material and Methods: Horizontal muscle surgery was applied to 22 eyes of 22 patients who were included in study. Visual acuity, retinoscopy and keratometry examinations were performed in all cases preoperatively. Keratometry were repeated at the second and twelfth weeks postoperatively. Horizontal muscle surgery was performed in the same eye in all cases. Preoperative refractive errors and postoperative refractive changes were evaluated.
Results: Significant changes were detected in average values of keratometry in all groups. No change was detected in spherical refractions of cases. Postoperative astigmatic refraction examinations, at 90° meridian were as - 0.02 ± 0.81 diopters at second week and -0.18 ± 0.65 diopters at twelfth week. At 180° meridian they were as ?0.36 ± 0.87 diopters at second week, 0.05 ± 0.83 diopters at twelfth week.
Conclusion: Minimal astigmatic change may occur after strabismus surgery. This change is more significant at 180° meridian, due to horizontal muscle surgery. As conclusion, the patients should be followed about the changes in refraction that may occur after strabismus surgery. Keywords: Strabismus, Refraction, Astigmatism
