Materials and Methods: The records of silicone oil removal cases in our clinic in the last ten years were investigated retrospectively for redetachment rate and its correlation with etiological factors, the duration of silicone oil retention, and the number of previously unsuccessful RD surgeries.
Results: 183 patients aged 6-75 were operated on for RD resulting from trauma, degenerative myopia, pseudophakia-aphakia, proliferative diabetic retinopathy or uveitis, using silicone oil tamponade and the mean duration of oil retention was 10.7±9.9 months. The cases in which retina was detached prior to silicone oil removal and the ones with insufficient follow-up were not included. Redetachment occured in 38.3% (46 eyes) following silicone oil removal. 82.6% (38 eyes) of the redetachments occured in the first 3 months. There was no significant difference in redetachment rates between previously unoperated cases and the ones operated on at least once for RD (p=0.959) and no correlation was found between the number of previous RD surgeries and redetacment (p= 0.536). Redetachment rate was 28.3% in the eyes silicone oil was retained for less than 6 months and 46.3% in the ones it was retained for more than 6 months, however this difference yielded no significance (p=0.059). No correlation was found between the length of oil retention and redetachment (p=0.335). The highest rate of redetachment was found to be in the pseudophakic-aphakic eyes (52.4%).
Conclusion: In our study, we encountered a 38.3% rate of retinal redetachmet following removal of intraocular silicone oil tamponade. This rate is independent on the duration of oil retention and the number of previous RD surgeries. The prognosis of pseudophakic-aphakic cases seems to be poorer after silicone oil removal, compared to the other groups. Keywords: Silicone oil, Silicone oil removal, Retinal redetachment
