Ocular Findings In The Patients With Down Syndrome

a Göz Hastalıkları AD, Akdeniz Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANTALYA Objective: To investigate ocular findings of Down syndrome, to determine it's frequency, to compare with another published results and to perform early theraupetic opportinies if needed.
Material and Methods: After chromosome analyses were performed, Down syndrome diagnosed in fifty patients. Routine ophthalmic examination, orthoptic evaluation, tear drainage tests, dilated fundus examination were performed. According to aged, the patients were classified as group I (0-5 years), group II (6-11 years) and group III (12-18 years).
Results: 22% Brushfield spots, 10% cataract, 16% strabismus, 68% refractive error, 10% nasolacrimal obstruction and 6% nystagmus were found in the patients with Down syndrome.
Conclusion: According to this paper and published results, motor and menthal progression and ocular findings must be followed closely in the patient with Down syndrome.Keywords: Down syndrome, brushfield spots, cataract, nystagmusTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2005, 14:17-24
