Material and Methods: Fifteen patients with severe ophthalmopathy, 15 patients without ophthalmopathy and 15 healthy sex and age matched controls were assessed. The criteria for severe ophthalmopathy were proptosis >19mm or a 3mm difference in Hertel exophthalmometry measurement between two eyes, diplopia, lid retraction and extraocular muscle thickening. The criteria for the absence of ophthalmopathy were proptosis <16mm, no diplopia, no lid retraction and no thickening of extraocular muscles. HLA typing was performed by using the method of complement dependent microlymphotoxicity. The data were analysed according to Chi- square (Fisher's exact ) test.
Results: When the group with severe ophthalmopathy was compared with the healthy controls and the group without ophthalmopathy: HLA-A26, B8, B35, BW4, DR8, DR9, DR11, and DR13 antigens were found statistically significant at p<0.05. HLA-A33 and HLA-DR3 antigens were found to be statistically lower in the groups with and without ophthalmopathy when compared with the healthy controls (p<0.05).
Conclusion: We think that, the severity of ophthalmopathy in Graves' disease may be partially dependent on the presence or absence of particular HLA antigens and due to the ethnic and local differences extended studies should be done. Keywords: Thyroid ophthalmopathy, HLA antigens, graves disease.Turkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2005, 14:7-12
