a2. Göz Kliniği, SB Ankara Ulucanlar Göz Hastanesi, ANKARA Objective: To evaluate the incidence and visual prognosis of a microkeratome related complication of LASIK surgery called free flap.
Material and Methods: At Refractive Surgery Department of the MH, Ankara Ulucanlar Eye Hospital myopic LASIK surgery was applied to 347 eyes. Thirteen out of 347 eyes had a microkeratome related free flap complication. In all operations Alcon SKBM microkeratome and Aesculap Meditec MEL70 laser device were used.
Results: In all of the 13 eyes the operations were completed sucessfully. No flap loss or damage was occured. Average follow up period was 14.7 ± 9.8 months. At the last postoperative examination 10 eyes were within ±0.50 dioptri, 11 eyes were within ± 1.0 dioptri and all eyes were within ± 2.0 diopters of emmetropia. Decrease in best corrected visual acuity was not seen in any of eyes. In 4 eyes, an increase in best corrected visual acuity was observed. Incidence of free flap complication was seen more frequently in the first half of the patients (p= 0.048).
Conclusion: Although LASIK offers postoperative patient comfort and early visual recovery, microkeratome related complications can be troublesome for both patient and surgeon. Free flap is one of these complications. Unless the flap was lost or damaged the surgery can be completed successfully and visual prognosis is good. The incidence of this complication decreases as the surgeon gains experience. Keywords: LASIK, complicationTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2005, 14:55-58
