aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Dicle Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, DİYARBAKIR Objective: To evaluate the reliability of non-contact tonometer (NCT) by comparing intraocular pressures (IOP) measured with NCT and Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT) and Schiötz (SCH) tonometers.
Material and Methods: Fifthy cases with 10 mmHg and lower IOP’s (hypotensive group), 50 cases with 10-20 mmHg IOP’s (normotensive group) and 50 cases with 21 mmHg and higher IOP’s (hypertensive group) were included in this study. IOP’s were measured with NCT, GAT and SCH tonometer and compared for all cases.
Results: In hypotensive group mean IOP’s were 10.12 ± 1.68 mmHg in right eyes and 10.09 ± 1.64 mmHg in left eyes with NCT; 8.80 ± 1.19 mmHg and 8.64 ± 1.17 mmHg with GAT and 9.08 ± 1.73 mmHg and 9.15 ± 2.03 mmHg with SCH tonometer. IOP’s measures with NCT were found significantly higher than those with GAT (p<0.05).
In normotensive group mean IOP values were 15.77 ± 2.82 mmHg in right eyes and 15.64±2.69 mmHg in left eyes with NCT; 13.76 ± 2.75 mmHg and 13.54 ± 2.99 mmHg with GAT and 13.23 ± 2.98 mmHg and 13.63 ± 2.99 mmHg with SCH tonometer. IOP values measured with NCT were found significantly higher when comparing with GAT and SCH tonometer measures (p<0.05).
In hypertensive group mean IOP values were 28.51 ± 10.55 mmHg in right eyes and 23.28 ± 8.27 mmHg in left eyes with NCT; 26.12 ± 9.64 and 21.12 ± 7.38 mmHg with GAT and 24.56 ± 9.55 and 20.60 ± 7.36 mmHg with SCH tonometer. NCT measures of IOPs were found significantly higher than GAT and SCH tonometer measuers (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It was determined that NCT and SCH measure statistically higher values in hypotensive group comparing with GAT, and NCT measures higher in normotensive and hypertensive groups. It was concluded that the measurements with NCT and SCH should be commented with special attention and GAT is convenient to prefer especially in the follow-up of glaucoma patients. Keywords: Non-contact tonometer, intraocular pressureTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2005, 14:59-63
