aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Başkent Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA The viscoelastic agents, initially introduced as vitreus-substitutes, have become indispensable tools in a variety of ophthalmic surgical procedures. The selection of viscoelastic substance that is most appropriate for the procedure relies on the surgeon’s knowledge of the physical and chemical properties, appropriate clinical uses and possible complications of these substances.
In this review, the rheologic properties of viscoelastics, the ingredients of commonly used substances, the desired properties of the ideal viscoelastic agent are presented, and clinical applications, possible complications and the ways to avoid these complications are discussed. Keywords: Complication, rheology, viscoelastic, viscosurgeryTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2005, 14:69-80
