aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Gazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA A 10-year-old boy (Case 1) presented with bilateral decreased vision. He had undergone bilateral cataract extraction when he was 1.5 months-old. His sister (Case 2) and mother (Case 3) had also a history of cataract surgery and decreased vision. Complete ophthalmologic examinations were performed in all of the cases. First two cases had bilateral aphakia. There was an aphakia in one eye and a dense nuclear cataract in the other eye of the 3rd case. Fundoscopic examinations were completely normal. Axial axis measurements were in normal ranges in all of three cases. 1st case underwent secondary foldable IOL (intraocular lens) implantation bilaterally. No other surgical treatments were performed in other two cases.
Congenital cataract might be associated with microcornea. Care must be taken in order to perform appropiate surgical technique and to prevent postoperative complications for the visual prognosis. As a result, long term follow-up is suggested in these group of patients. Keywords: Congenital cataract, microcornea, secondary intraocular lens implantationTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2005, 14:99-104
