Objective: To evaluate the topographic and functional differences of optic disc between with normal intraocular pressure and pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome and normal eyes, using Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) and computerized visual field analyzer and to investigate the presence of early glaucomatous predictors.
Material and Methods: Thirty-two normal and 31 age-matched subjects with normal IOP and PEX syndrome were included in the study. Visual field tests and mean topographic image were evaluated and optic disc topographic parameters, cup area, disc area, cup/disk ratio, rim area, cup volume, rim volume, mean cup depth, maximum cup depth, cup shape measure, height variation contour, mean retinal nerve fiber layer thickness, retina nerve fiber layer cross sectional area were calculated using a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope. Student-t test was used to evaluate the differences between visual field indices mean deviation, pattern standart deviation and HRT parameters in two groups. The data were assessed by Pearson correlation analysis in order to compare visual field indices and optic disc topographic parameters. To determine which of the optic disc parameters were related to mean deviation and pattern standard deviation, multiple linear regression analysis was performed.
Results: Mean values of mean deviation and pattern standart deviation and cup area and cup/disk ratio values among HRT parameters were found to be statistically significant in control and PEX group (p< 0.05). In both groups, no statistically significant correlation between HRT parameters and visual field global indices is detected. Multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated statistically significant relationship between mean deviation and cup volume in control group and between pattern standart deviation and disk area in PEX group.
Conclusion: When high mean mean deviation, pattern standard deviation, cup area and cup/disk ratio values are considered in pseudoexfoliation group with normal IOP, it is concluded that PEX syndrome group has early glaucomatous characteristics.
