Üy., ESKİŞEHİR This study was planned to investigate the effects of smoking on pulsatile ocular blood flow (POBF) in cases with diabetic, branch retinal vein occlusion and the normal.
Intraocular pressure (IOP) and POBF values were determined in 15 smokers with diabetic retinopathy, 8 cases with retinal branch vein occlusion and 13 normal cases. The measurements were determined after 6-hour no-smoking period. After that period the subjects smoked only one cigarette and the measurements were carried out before and after smoking, in both sitting and lying positions. Blood glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, hemoglobin, leucocyte, and glycohemoglobin levels were measured in all cases.
There was no difference among the groups in term of age, sex, duration of smoking and the number of cigarettes (p> 0.05). IOP values of the subjects in lying position were found to be significantly higher than the ones in sitting position (p<0.001), and the POBF values in lying position were significantly lower when compared to the ones in sitting position (p<0.01). When the values before and after smoking were compared no difference was found in the IOP values (p> 0.05 ). As for the after smoking POBF values in sitting position, in three groups they were found to be significantly lower than the before smoking values (p<0.01). No difference was obtained in lying position values (p>0.05).
While IOP was found to be significantly high in lying position in all subjects, POBF was significantly low. The POBF values in sitting position, after smoking, were observed to decrease significantly. It was concluded that smoking with its acute effect could increase the existing ischemia more in the patients with vasculopathy. Keywords: Cigarette, Pulsatile ocular blood flow, RetinopathyTurkiye Klinikleri Oftalmoloji 1997, 6:183-187
