Objective: To evaluate the distribution of indications for penetrating keratoplasty operations.
Material and Methods: The penetrating keratoplasty (PK) operations performed at Haydarpasa Numune Training and Research Hospital Eye Clinic 2, from April 2001 to May 2005 were reviewed using the operation room records. The age and sex of the patient, indication for keratoplasty and type of the operation (PK only or PK with associated surgical procedures) were recorded.
Results: A total of 192 operations were included in the study. The most common indication was keratoconus (34.3%), followed by pseudophakic corneal edema (16.7%) and trauma (11.5%). Of the 192 operations, 177 (92.2%) were PK only, 9 (4.7%) were combined with extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) and posterior chamber (PC) intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, 4 (2.1%) were combined with phacoemulsification and PC IOL implantation, 2 (1.0%) were combined with ECCE and anterior chamber (AC) IOL implantation. There was a PC IOL in 81.3%, an AC IOL in 15.6%, and scleral fixated (SF) IOL in 3.1% of the patients operated for pseudophakic corneal edema. The most common primary indication in rekeratoplasties was pseudophakic corneal edema (41.7%).
Conclusion: In our series, keratoconus was the most common indication for keratoplasty. Pseudophakic corneal edema and trauma were other common indications.
