Material and Methods: Forty-two eyes of 21 patients who underwent simultaneous lens extraction and posterior capsulotomy with anterior vitrectomy and IOL implantation because of congenital cataract were evaluated retrospectively.
Results: Mean age at the operation was 6.57 ± 2.80 years (range, 3-11 years). The average follow-up time was 9.85 ± 2.42 months (range, 7-16 months). While visual acuities before operation varied from hand movement to counting fingers at 5 meters, visual acuties after operation varied from counting fingers at 2 meters to 20/25. Visual acuity could be assessed in 12 cases at last visit, and mean value of visual acuity was better in these cases. Visual acuity was 20/40 or better in eight of 24 eyes. Pupillary ectopia was detected in 4 eyes, and keratik presipitat on IOL in 3 eyes at last visit. Glaucoma or posterior capsular opacification was not detected in any of the patients at final examination.
Conclusion: Simultaneous bilateral lens extraction and posterior capsulotomy with anterior vitrectomy and IOL implantation is effective and safe procedure in bilateral congenital cataracts. Keywords: Cataract, lens extraction, anterior vitrectomy.Turkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:1-5
