a1. Göz Kliniği, SB. Ankara Ulucanlar Göz Hastanesi, ANKARA Objective: To compare the efficacy and adverse effects of latanoprost, travoprost, and bimatoprost as monoterapy in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).
Material and Methods: Between April 2004 and April 2005, 174 eyes of 90 patients who were newly diagnosed as POAG were enrolled in the study, at Glaucoma Department in our clinic. Patients were randomized to take latanoprost 0.005% (1st group), travoprost 0.004% (2nd group), and bimatoprost 0.03% (3rd group) and they were called back on the 1. week, 2. weeks, the 1. month, 3. month, 6. month, 9. months for control. All the patients were scored by means of hyperemia with one physician and questioned for pain, ocular pruritis and burning, hyperemia, foreign body sensation, blurred vision. For statistical analysis oneway ANOVA, 2, paired t test, wilcoxon test and Mann-Withney U test were used. For primary effect, intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured at 8:00 AM and the difference between the beginning and the end of the treatment were taken. p< 0.05 was accepted as stastically significant.
Results: Of all patients, 84 (93.3%) had POAG and 6 (6.6%) had pseudoexfoliation, and they were randomized in three groups. Mean follow up in 1. group was 17.1 ± 2.49 weeks (4-36), in 2. group was 14.1 ± 3.42 (4-32) weeks, and in 3. group13.3 ± 3.12 (4-30) weeks. Pretreatment IOPs in first, 2., and 3. groups were 23.80 ± 4.89, 24.23 ± 5.78, and 24.05 ± 3.86 respectively. Posttreatment results were 16.32 ± 2.49, 16.00 ± 3.42, and 15.75 ± 3.12. The primary side effect of all groups was hyperemia, which was seen 15.5% in first group, 42.1% in 2. group and %50 in 3. group.
Conclusions: Pretreatment IOPs at 08.00 AM were similar in all groups. Posttreatment IOPs were decreased significantly (p< 0.005). Adverse effects were mostly seen in 3. group, where they were least in 1. group. Keywords: Primary open-angle glaucoma, latanoprost, travoprost, bimatoprost, efficacy, adverse effectsTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:12-17
