Material and Methods: Thirty consecutive patients with primary open angle glaucoma were divided into three groups each consisting of 10 patients. Travoprost, latanoprost, and bimatoprost were prescribed in Group1, 2, and 3, respectively, for a 6-month study period. Pre- and post-treatment mean IOP levels, diurnal IOP variations, and Humphrey visual field test global indices were compared.
Results: Significant IOP decreases were found in all three groups during the study period, while IOP levels were significantly lower in Group3 at the 3rd (p= 0.006) and 6th (p= 0.009) months. Significant decreases in IOP variations were verified in Group3 at the 1st (p= 0.015) and 6th (p= 0.015) months, and in Group2 at month 6 (p= 0.027). A significant improvement in mean deviation (MD) (p= 0.037) and an apparent improvement in corrected pattern standard deviation scores (p=0.074) were found in Group2, and a significant improvement in MD (p= 0.012) was noted in Group3 at month 6. No significant difference was found in terms of side effects except for a higher score of hyperaemia (p= 0.032) in the bimatoprost group.
Conclusion: Our results with the three prostaglandin analogs in a limited number of patients after a 6-month study period might suggest a sequence as bimatoprost > latanoprost > travoprost in terms of IOP control, and as latanoprost> bimatoprost > travoprost in terms of visial field improvement. Keywords: Prostaglandin analogs, intraocular pressure, diurnal variations in IOPTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:18-24
