Material and Methods: 536 POAG cases with the mean age of 57.9 ± 7.1 and 298 normal cases with the mean age of 56.3 ± 6.8 were included to our study. The groups were divided into 3 subgroups according to their ages (group I: younger than 50 years, group II: between 50 and 60 years, group III: older than 60 years). We investigated and compared the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), arterial hypertension (HT), coronary heart disease (CHD) and hypercholesterolemia or hyperlipidemia in these cases.
Results: The prevalence of DM and CHD were found to be higher in total POAG group than total control group and these differences were statistically significant (p= 0.027, p= 0.021). Only the prevalence of hyperlipidemia was significantly higher in POAG cases than control group in cases younger than 50 years old p= 0.008). The prevalence of DM, HT and CHD were significantly higher in POAG group in cases between 50 and 60 years old (p= 0.008, p= 0.038, p= 0.04). In cases older than 60 years old, no differences between the prevalence of the systemic vascular diseases between both groups were found.
Conclusion: Systemic vascular diseases like DM, CHD, HT and hypercholesterolemia or hyperlipidemia may be risk factors for the development and progression of POAG.Keywords: Glaucoma, systemic vascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, coronary heart disease, hyperlipidemiaTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:40-44
