Material and Methods: Sixty primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients (29 male, 31 female) with a mean age of 48.62±5.0 years were included in the study. The control group consisted of 16 cases (7 male, 9 female) with no ocular and systemic disease and a mean age of 49.60 ± 5.52 years. The glaucoma group was randomly divided into four groups each of which used one of the following antiglaucomatous drugs: Timolol maleat, timolol maleat+dorzolamide combination, latanoprost and travoprost. The peak cystolic flow rate, end-diastolic flow rate and resistance index of central retinal artery (CRA), ophthalmic artery (OA) and temporal posterior ciliary artery (tPCA) were measured in all cases by using color Doppler ultrasonography (CDU). The data of POAG group before the treatment was compared with that of the control group and postreatment measurements at the 1st month.
Results: After the treatment an IOP measurement of lower than 19 mmHg was achieved in all patients. Latanoprost, travoprost revealed increase of peak cystolic flow rate in OA causing change in end-diastolic flow rate of SRA and tPSA. No effect on the blood velocity of CRA, tPSA and OA was observed timolol maleat+dorzolamide combination group. However, the timolol maleat group showed decreased end-diastolic flow rate in tPSA.
Conclusion: Though the antiglaucomatous drugs evaluated in our study demonstrated various effects on retrobulbar ocular blood flow, timolol maleat+dorzolamide combination seemed to have the least effect on ocular haemodynamy. Keywords: Primary open angle gloucoma, color doppler ultrasonograpy, blood flow velocity, latanoprost, travoprost, timolol, dorzolamideTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:61-67
