Century.
Muhammed bin Mahmud-ı Şirvâni had written a book about the eye diseases and treatment named “Mürşid” in 1437 and 1438 years. The fifth item of the XVth section of the second volume of the Manisa copy of this hand-written book is looked over. This item is written about the causes of strabismus and definition of its drugs.
Şirvâni divides the strabismus in two main groups: In birth (congenital) and in adults (acquired). Severe headache, febril convulsion, getting cold, epilepsy, meningitis, hydrops, light-headedness, dizziness, and many disorders were shown as causes of strabismus. As for him, the drugs were not beneficial in the therapeutic approach of congenital strabismus.
Dividing the strabismus by Şirvâni in two main groups as congenital and acquired gives the meaning of the presence of the knowledge of the differences between these two strabismus types, in that period. The knowledge about the etiological causes of strabismus such as looseness of the muscles and nerves, edema, spasm and other causes which are not solved even yet attracted our attention. Keywords: Strabismus, etiology, history of medicine, 15th Century, medieval timeTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:68-71
