aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR Objective: To evaluate the posterior segment complications in patients who had secondary transscleral sutured intraocular lens implantation.
Material and Methods: The medical charts of 112 aphakic eyes of 96 consecutive patients who had secondary transscleral sutured intraocular lens implantation between May 1998-January 2005 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients who had combined surgery such as partial penetrating keratoplasty or pars plana vitrectomy with transscleral sutured intraocular lens implantation at the same session were excluded. Patients were evaluated for visual outcome and posterior segment complications after the surgery.
Results: The mean follow-up was 2.1 years (Range, 9 months-6 years). During the follow-up period, macular edema was observed in 5 eyes, choroidal detachment in 10 eyes, vitreous haemorrhage in 5 eyes, diabetic retinopathy progression in 9 eyes, reghmatogenous retinal detachment in 2 eyes, exudative age-related macular degeneration in 1 eye, epiretinal membrane in 1 eye, central retinal vein occlusion in 1 eye, suprachoroidal haemorrhage in 1 eye, macular hole in 1 eye.
Conclusion: Secondary transscleral sutured intraocular lens implantation needs to have sufficient follow-up period in terms of posterior segment complications postoperatively. Keywords: Cataract, retinal detachment, lens implantation, intraocularTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:115-120
