Pterygium And Dry Eye Syndrome

aGöz Hastalıkları Kliniği, Kızılcahamam Devlet Hastanesi,bGöz Hastalıkları AD, Ankara Ulucanlar Göz Hastalıkları Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, ANKARA Objective: To compare the eyes with pterygium with the healthy fellow eyes of patients with unilateral pterygium in terms of the amount of basal and reflex tear secretion and tear film stability.
Material and Methods: Of the fourty-three patients with unilateral pterygium; eyes with pterijiyum were included in the study group while the healthy fellow eyes in the control group. Presence of dry eye symptoms was checked in all eyes. Schirmer test, with and without the application of topical anesthesia, tear film break-up time and corneal staining pattern with fluorescein were evaluated in all eyes. Eyes with pterygium were compared with the healthy fellow eyes in terms of these parameters.
Results: Statistically significant differences were found between the eyes with and without pterygium in terms of the incidence of dry eye symptoms (p= 0.034), tear film break-up time (p= 0.018) and the results of Schirmer test with (p= 0.012) and without the application of topical anesthesia (p= 0.023) between the two groups
Conclusion: The amount of basal and reflex tear secretion and tear film stability are significantly decreased in eyes with pterygium while the incidence of dry eye symptoms is increased.Keywords: Pterygium, dry eye syndromeTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:127-131
