Diabetic Retinopathy And Its Medical Management

aGöz Hastalıkları Kliniği,bİç Hastalıkları Kliniği, Dumlupınar Üniversitesi Hastanesi, KÜTAHYA Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most frequent causes of blindness in developed countries and its risk increases by duration of diabetes mellitus (DM). Other than the duration of DM, inappropriate blood glucose regulation, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and renal diseases like some other coexisting disorders also affect development and progression of DR, inappropriately. Therefore, first step in treatment of DR is regulation of the systemic risk factors. Although laser photocoagulation and vitreo-retinal surgery are the main treatment modalities of DR, medical approaches have advanced, currently. Antioxidants, inhibitors of aldose reductase, advanced glycation end products, protein kinase C, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and intravitreal corticosteroid injection are some of the medical treatment modalities of DR. Secondary to the advanced medical treatment modalities, development and progression of DR can be delayed and, especially with the intravitreal injections of corticosteroids and VEGF inhibitors, DR can be reversed in some extend. Beside the decrease in number of DR-induced blindness cases, number of cases requiring laser photocoagulation and vitreo-retinal surgery like some more destructive approaches can also be reduced by the advances in medical approaches. Keywords: Diabetic retinopathy, medical managementTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:132-139
