Material and Methods: Two specimens from the lower eyelid forniceal conjunctiva and eyelashes of 33 patients with anterior blepharitis and 20 age matched control patients were obtained with a dacron tipped rod for culture. After the specimens were placed in 5% sheep blood agar plate, they were incubated at 37ºC for 18 hours. Slime production by the bacteria was evaluated by tube adherence following isolation of CNS with classical methods.
Results: CNS were isolated from 21 (63.6%) and 8 (40%) patients in anterior blepharitis and control groups, respectively (p> 0.05). Slime production was noted in 15 patients out of 21 (71.4%) in the anterior blepharitis group and 2 patients out of 8 (25%) in the control group (p< 0.05).
Conclusion: The frequency of slime production of CNS isolated from patients with anterior blepharitis is higher than that of CNS isolated from control patients. Together with other etiological factors, slime production property of CNS may have a significant role in the pathogenesis of anterior blepharitis. Keywords: Blepharitis, glycolipoprotein, extracellular slime, bacteria, staphylococcusTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:77-79
