Prisms And Prismatic Effects Of Lenses
Dr. Ahmet ÖZERa
aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Eskişehir Osmangazi Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ESKİŞEHİR The prism is simply a refracting material with triangular cross section having an apex and a base. The power of prism is defined by the amount of deviation produced as a light ray traverses the prism. This deviation is determined by centimeters of deflection measured 100 cm from the prism. The amount of deviation is expressed as prism diopters (∆). The prisms deflect light toward their base, but the patient perceives the light as deflected toward the prism apex and virtual images are diplaced toward the apex of prisms. The prisms are very useful in the accurate measurement of strabismus and treatment of certain patients who have a small degree of horizontal and vertical strabismus. Keywords: Strabismus, therapy, prisms, lensesTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:80-86
