An increase in the its incidence has been reported within the last four decades. Widespread use of broad spectrum antibiotics and steroids, contact lens use, ocular trauma especially with vegetable and organic material, ocular surface diseases are some of the contributing factors for the development of fungal keratitis. More than 70 species of fungi have been reported as pathogenic to human cornea and the most frequently isolated pathogen varies with the geographical area. As the clinical features of the disease may mimic other infectious keratitis, misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment are reported to be common. Thus, the awareness about the disease, its predisposing risk factors, diagnostic techniques and treatment strategies are very important.
The purpose of this article is to review the epidemiology, etiology, risk factors, laboratory diagnosis and clinical features of fungal keratitis and to discuss the recently published studies in relation to the treatment of the disease. Keywords: Keratitis, epidemiology, risk factors, laboratory techniques and procedures, eye infections, fungalTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:87-96
