Acanthamoeba Keratitis

There is an expressive increase in the frequency of Acanthamoeba keratitis parallel to increase in usage of contact lenses after 1980s. The most important reason of this increase is use of non sterile solutions and salt tablets for cleaning the lenses. Acanthamoeba species are one of the most important causes of microbial keratitis resulting with severe ocular inflammation and visual loss. Its clinical sight is so variable. Difficulties in diagnosis also cause delays in treatment.
In this review, the history, clinical properties, diagnosis methods and histopathologic properties of Acanthamoeba keratitis have been reviewed, and tried to consider importance of early diagnosis and the treatment.Keywords: Acanthamoeba keratitis, corneaTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2006, 15:97-103
