Objective: To evaluate the difference of intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements among the three instruments (Goldmann Applanation Tonometry, Noncontact Tonometry and TonoPen) after LASIK for myopia.
Material and Methods: The study included 140 consecutive eyes of 82 patients. Forty-eight patients were female and 34 patients were male. The mean age of the patients was 30.85 ± 7.79 ranging from 20 to 51 years. LASIK surgeries were performed between July 1999 and January 2000. IOP were measured by Goldmann Applanation Tonometry (GAT), Noncontact Tonometry (NTC), and Tono-Pen before and after LASIK. Additionally we measured central corneal thickness (CCT) by ultrasonic pachymetry and keratometry pre-and post-operatively. Preoperative IOP was considered as control values in all patients. The results before and after LASIK were compared statistically.
Results: IOP was significantly decreased after LASIK in all patients when compared with the preoperative control measurements (11.17 ± 1.69 versus 13.12 ± 1.49 mmHg, with GAT (p 0.0001); 12.05 ± 1.58 versus 13.43 ± 1.52 mmHg with NTC (p 0.0001); 11.98 ± 1.59 versus 13.34 ± 1.49 mmHg with TonoPen (p< 0.0001). There was also a significant correlation between IOP changes measured by GAT, NTC, TonoPen and CCT changes and keratometry (r> 0.39, p< 0.0001 for each).
Conclusion: Although decreased IOP was found in all eyes measured by the three different instruments, there was not significantly difference among the instruments used. However there was a significant correlation between IOP changes and CCT changes and keratometry readings. It may be helpful to correlate the IOP readings with CCT and keratometry values in early detection and IOP follow up of glaucoma after LASIK.
