aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Abant İzzet Baysal Üniversitesi İzzet Baysal Tıp Fakültesi, BOLU Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of anterior lamellar repositioning (ALR) surgery for treatment of diffuse trichiasis.
Material and Methods: Fourteen eyes of 9 patients with diffuse trichiasis in upper or lower lid (6 upper and 8 lower lids totally) with no additional pathologies like entropion, lid laxity, ptosis, or cicatricial changes in posterior lamella were evaluated. Following ALR surgery, patients were evaluated for primary success of the procedure, recurrence, irregularity of lid contour, defective lid closure, scarring, exaggerated eversion of the eyelashes, and patient satisfaction on follow-up examinations performed on the 7th day, 1st and 6th months, and yearly thereafter.
Results: The time period since the onset of symptoms changed between 3 and 18 months. Primary surgical failure was not observed in any patient. There was no recurrence during an average follow-up period of 13.89 ± 7.04 (3 – 22) months. One patient had a mild lid notch in his upper lid, which he did not complain about. No defective lid closure and scarring of the lid margin was observed. Patient satisfaction was excellent in all patients except one who reported dissatisfaction with hyperemia on the lid margin and exaggerated eversion of the eyelashes only during the early postoperative period.
Conclusion: ALR, a method widely used for treatment of mild and moderate cicatricial entropion, has a satisfactory outcome in patients with diffuse trichiasis. ALR is easy to perform, and obviates the need for a specific surgical device. Keywords: Eyelids; eyelashes; surgery; treatment outcome; complicationsTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:28-33
