aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Fırat Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ELAZIĞ Angiogenesis is defined as the formation of new capillaries from a pre-existing vasculature. This process is very important in physiologic conditions. It is only induced during the female reproductive cycle, tissue repair and wound healing. In the eye diseases associated with angiogenesis, this delicate balance is disturbed. Angiogenesis is a potentially visually threatening complication of eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), and a large number of other eye conditions. Because of its importance in wound healing, tumour growth, and other pathological situations, angiogenesis has been extensively studied in the fields of oncology, rheumatology, cardiology, and ophthalmology. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a highly specific mitogen for vascular endothelial cells and it induces endothelial cell proliferation, promotes cell migration, and inhibits apoptosis. VEGF that induces angiogenesis as well as permeabilization of blood vessels in vivo, plays a central role in the regulation of angiogenesis. An antiangiogenic therapy is aimed at inhibiting the growth of new blood vessels and should prevent onset or progression of neovascularization. Several antineovascular agents antagonize the function of VEGF, by blocking its proangiogenic activity. The understanding of VEGF’s effects on angiogenesis and vascular permeability and VEGF modulation will give us new insights about the treatment of eye diseases associated angiogenesis. New studies are needed for preventing or treating conditions that will lead to significant visual loss or blindness, driven by unregulated angiogenesis. Keywords: Vascular endothelial growth factors; neovascularization, pathologic; neovascularization, physiologicTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:38-46
