aGöz Hastalıkları Kliniği, İzmir Tepecik Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, İZMİR Objective: Investigating the necessity of bicanalicular silicone tube entubation with dacryocystorhinostomy in the patients who are not complicated and goes to the dacryocystorhinostomy surgery for the first time.
Material and Methods: In this study we reviewed the 38 eye of 38 patients who went to dacryocystorhinostomy surgery with or without bicanalicular silicone tube entubation in our clinic bet-ween 02/01/2002 and 11/11/2002. The data was evaluated retrospectively. Dacryocystorhinostomy with bicanalicular silicone tube intubation was performed in 16 patients, only dacryocystorhinostomy procedure was performed in 22 patients.
Results: There were 38 patients that had gone to dacryocystorhinostomy operation in 2002 for idiopathic nasolacrimal passage occlusion. 33 patient were women, 5 patient were men. They were between of 16-60 years old and their avarage age was 41.2. 16 patients had gone to dacryocystorhinostomy with silicone tube intubation, 22 patients had gone to DCR without silicone tube intubation. The success rate was 87.5% with bicanalicular silicone tube intubation and 86.3% without bicanalicular silicone tube intubation.
Conclusion: In uncomplicated situations (normal anatomy, uncomplicated operation) bicanalicular silicone tube intubation brought no gain to the patients who had gone to first dacryocystorhinostomy surgery for chronic dacryocystitis. Bicanalicular silicone tube intubation has to be reserved for complicated patients. Keywords: Dacryocystitis, dacryocystorhinostomy, silicone tubeTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:77-81
