aGöz Hastalıkları AD, bAllerji-İmmünoloji BD, Celal Bayar Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, MANİSA Objective: To describe the systemic and ocular manifestations in patients with temporal arteritis.
Material and Methods: This study includes 10 cases of temporal arteritis consulted and followed at the department of ophthalmology of Celal Bayar University medical Faculty in between 1998 and 2005. In addition to ophthalmologic and systemic examinations, sedimentation, C-reactive protein (CRP) and total blood test were done.
Results: Two out of 10 cases had systemic involvement, 5 cases had systemic involvement with ocular involvement and 3 cases had only ocular involvement. All the cases had high sedimentation rate and CRP level and the level of hematocrit in total blood tests had decreased except 2 cases.
Conclusion: Because temporal arteritis is a potentially blinding disease, its early diagnosis and treatment are the keys to preventing blindness. When a patient older than 55 years presents with a history of amaurosis fugax, sudden visual loss in one or both eyes, the physician must first rule out temporal arteritis by evaluating the erythrocyte sedimendation rate and C-reactive protein level on an emergency bias. If there is a high index of suspicion for temporal arteritis, we recommend immediate high dose intravenous methylprednisolon without waiting for temporal artery biopsy results. Keywords: Temporal arteritis; ischemic optic neuropathy; retinal artery occlusionTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:82-87
