Material and Methods: Thirty-six eyes of 18 patients with DM and 36 eyes of 18 age and sex matched healthy controls were included in this study. Presence of dry eye symptoms was asked to all the individuals included in the study. Schirmer test was applied to, tear film break-up time and corneal staining pattern with fluorescein were evaluated in all eyes. Two groups were compared in terms of these parameters by using the unpaired samples t test and chi-square test.
Results: There were not statistically significant differences in the incidence of dry eye symptoms, tear film break-up time, and the results of Schirmer test with the application of topical anesthesia between the two groups (p> 0.05). A corneal lesion staining with fluorescein was not detected in any of the eyes in both groups. The results of Schirmer test without the application of topical anesthesia between the two groups were significantly lower in the diabetic group (p< 0.05).
Conclusion: The incidence of dry eye symptoms, the basal tear secretion and the tear film stability are similar in diabetic patients with the healthy controls while the reflex tear secretion is significantly lower. Keywords: Diabetes mellitus; dry eye syndromesTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:88-91
