The Course Of Uveitis In Patients Diagnosed As Ankylosing Spondylitis

a1. Göz Kliniği, Ankara Ulucanlar Göz Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, ANKARA Objective: To evaluate the clinical course and characterization of uveitis in patients with ankylosing spondylitis.
Material and Methods: We have retrospectively evaluated a total of 25 patients (20 male, 5 female; 34 eyes) with ankylosing spondylitis and uveitis treated at the Uvea Department of the Ankara Ulucanlar Hospital. All patiens were also under the control of Rheumatology Department. Age, following time, visual acuities in the first and last examination, localization of uveitis, medications to control uveitis, types of ocular surgery and ocular complications were recorded retrospectively.
Results: The median age was 42 years (20-71). The average following time was 22 months (12-108). All of the patients were diagnosed as iridocyclitis. The complications observed in patiens with uveitis and ankylosing spondylitis were as follows: posterior synechiae in 3 eyes, cataract in 3 eyes of 3 patients, vitreous condensation in 2 eyes epiretinal membrane in one eye and cystoid macular edema in 3 eyes.
Conclusion: Ankylosing spondylitis, a common rheumatic condition may present with eye involvemet. The prognosis of uveitis in patients with ankylosing spondylitis and resultant visual acuity is quite good. Among patients with chronic uveitis and ankylosing spondylitis, sight threatining complications such as glaucoma, optic atrophy, cystoid macular edema is not frequent even after reccurent uveitis attacks.Keywords: Spondylitis, ankylosing; iridocyclitis; complicationsTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:98-101
