Material and Methods: Fourty one patients with POAG and OH were enrolled in this study. Patients received either topical travoprost 0.004% or topical bimatoprost 0.03% for 3 months. Peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolik velocity (EDV) and resistivity index (RI) of the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA) and temporal short posterior ciliary artery (TSPCA) were measured using colour Doppler imaging ultrasound in baseline and after 3 months of treatment. Intraocular pressure (IOP), systemic blood pressure, heart rates were recorded and perfussion pressure (PP) was calculated.
Results: Both travoprost and bimatoprost significantly reduced IOP (p< 0.001). While there was a statistically significant decrease in peak systolic velocity and end diastolic velocity of the temporal short posterior siliary artery (p< 0.05), no significant change was observed in the other vessels with travoprost treatment (p> 0.05). Topical bimatoprost did not significantly alter flow velocities or resistive indices in the retrobulbar vessels after 3 months. There was a significantly increase in perfussion pressure in the both treatment groups.
Conclusion: Topical travoprost 0.004% and bimatoprost 0.03% significantly reduced IOP inpatients with POAG and OHT without causing significant haemodynamic alterations in the retrobulbar vessels, except a decrease in PSV and EDV in TSPCA with travoprost treatment. Both travoprost and bimatoprost increased ocular PP.Keywords: Travoprost; bimatoprost; ultrasonography, doppler, color; blood flow velocityTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:102-107
