A 26-year-old female patient presented to our clinic with a one-week history of blurred vision in her left eye. Visual acuity and ophthalmological findings of anterior and posterior segments of her right eye were within normal limits. There was no reduction in visual acuity of her left eye. On biomicroscopic evaluation, there were +4 cells in the anterior chamber and vitreous and optic disc was edematous on ophthalmoscopy. Toxoplasma antibody levels were tested upon progression despite steroid therapy and empirical treatment for toxoplasma was started. Anti-toxoplasma IgG and IgM levels were found to be high. On follow-up examinations, her clinical signs regressed and anti-toxoplasma IgM antibodies were found to be negative.
It is advisable to keep in mind that toxoplasmosis may be the etiological factor in acute uveitis even if there is no primary lesion in the retina. Empirical treatment for toxoplasmosis is crucial in preventing complications in suspected cases. Keywords: Toxoplasma, uveitisTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:127-129
