Material and Methods: The swab samples collected from the lower fornix of the right eyes of the total 30 vernal conjunctivitis patients, were bacteriologically cultured. After 18-24 hours of aerobic incubation, culture plates were evaluated. Bacterial growth of catalase positive, Gram positive cocci identified as Staphylococcus aureus and Coagulase-Negative Staphylococci (CoNS) by classic bacteriological methods. Penicillin, ciprofloxacin, fusidic acid, gentamicin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, clindamycin, chloramphenicole and co-trimoxazole susceptibility of these staphylococci were investigated with disk-diffusion method according to NCCLS (National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards) recommendation.
Results: Of the cultures from the total 30 patients included in to the study, S. aureus grew in 8 (26.6%) samples, CoNS grew in 12 (40%) samples and S. aureus and CoNS simultanously grew in 4 (13.3%) samples. Six (50%) of 12 S. aureus, and 8 (50%) of 16 CoNSs were found methicillin resistant.
Conclusion: In patients with vernal conjunctivitis who will be treated with operation, we think selection of the appropriate antibiotics according to susceptibility pattern of the strains in prophylactic therapies to prevent post operative staphylococcal endophtalmitis, will be effective to prevent the development of infection. Keywords: Conjunctivitis, allergic; staphylococcinTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:150-154
