aGöz Hastalıkları Kliniği, Aksaray Devlet Hastanesi, AKSARAY Objective: To evaluate the visual outcomes of phacoemulsification and the effect of phacoemulsification on the progression of macular degeneration in eyes with bilateral symmetric age related macular degeneration and cataract.
Material and Methods: Thirty-two eyes of 16 patients with bilateral symmetric age related macular degeneration and cataract were included in the study. For each patient; phacoemulsification was performed to the eye with denser cataract and these eyes were taken into the study group while the fellow eyes of the same patients were taken into the control group. Patients were assessed preoperatively and at 1st, 6th and 12th months after surgery in terms of visual acuity and grade of age related macular degeneration. Wilcoxon signed-rank and t tests were used for statistical analysis.
Results: A statistically significant increase was detected in visual acuity of eyes with age related macular degeneration after phacoemulsification (p= 0.018). Age related macular degeneration progressed in 5 of 16 eyes which were applied phacoemulsification and in 4 of 16 eyes in the control group. The difference in the rates of progression of macular degeneration between two groups was not found statistically significant (p= 0.87).
Conclusion: Eyes with mild and moderate age related macular degeneration benefit from phacoemulsification in terms of visual results. Phacoemulsification does not seem to increase the risk of progression of age related macular degeneration. Keywords: Macular degeneration; phacoemulsification; retinal drusenTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:155-158
