Objective: To evaluate the properties and complications of ocular involvement in patients with juvenile idiopathic artritis (JIA).
Material and Methods: Fifty-one patients with JIA were included in this study. Duration, type and onset age of JIA, anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) status were noted. Visual acuity, ocular complications and the course of uveitis were noted. Risk factors associated with ocular involvement and complications were identified. Chi-square and t tests were used for statistical analysis.
Results: There was ocular involvement in 14 (27.4%) of 51 patients with JIA and ocular complications were detected in 6 (42.86%) of them. Early disease onset, longer duration of disease, ANA positivity were risk factors both for ocular involvement and complications (p< 0.05). Ocular involvement was more common in pauciarticular form (p< 0.05). Ocular involvement was mostly in the form of acute iridocyclitis but complications were more common in chronic form (p< 0.05). No significant differences were found between subtypes of JIA in terms of types of uveitis and the incidence of ocular complications (p> 0.05).
Conclusion: Early disease onset, longer duration of disease, ANA positivity are risk factors both for ocular involvement and complications such as cataract, glaucoma, band keratopathy and posterior sinechia, in patients with JIA. Ocular involvement is more common in pauciarticular type. While the most common form of ocular involvement is acute iridocyclitis, the most common form leading to ocular complications is chronic iridocyclitis. There are no significant differences between the subtypes of JIA in terms of type of uveitis and the incidence of ocular complications.
