aGöz Hastalıkları Kliniği, İzmir Tepecik Eğitim Hastanesi, İZMİR Objective: To report the results of probing and irrigation of the nasolacrimal passage of the patients with mitomycin C who suffers from chronic dacryocystitis due to nasolacrimal passage obstruction.
Material and Methods: Under topical anesthesia probing and irrigation with 0.2mg/ml MMC was performed in 18 eyes of 18 patients over 60 years-old who admitted with epiphora and in whom chronic dacryocystitis due to nasolacrimal duct obstruction was found. The patients were examined at the first day, first week, first month, third month and then once in three months.
Results: All the patients were over 60 years old and suffered at least one systemic disease. 15 patients were female (83.3%), 3 patients were male (16.7%). They were between 60–72 years old and mean age was 64.8. Avarage follow up time was of 9.8 months (SD:1.3), ranging from 9 to 12 months. At the last visit 8 of the 18 patients (%44.4) had their nasolacrimal passage open. Nasolacrimal passage occlusion recurred in 10 of the 18 patients (%55.6).
Conclusion: Probing and irrigation with MMC is a method that can be easily performed to the patients who can have problems with general anesthesia. Although the success rate is not as good as dacryocystorhinostomy, by the success rate of %44 probing and irrigation of the nasolacrimal passage with MMC can be tried as the first procedure in selected patients because of its low complication risks, low cost and its simplicity. Keywords: Mitomycin; irrigation; lacrimal duct obstructionTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:170-173
