In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the possible ocular risk factors such as refractive status, intraocular pressure (IOP), and pachymetry measurements in patients with BRVO.
Material and Methods: Twenty-two patients with BRVO and age and sex-matched control group of 20 people without a history of retinal vein occlusion (RVO) are involved to this study. Refraction status is evaluated, axial length, keratometry, IOP and pachymetry measurements are made in patient and control groups during their ophthalmologic examinations. Axial length and pachymetry measurements are compared in patient and control groups. Refraction, keratometry and IOP measurements are compared in both the diseased and the other eye of the patient; and the diseased eye of the patient and the control group.
Results: Eleven (50%) of the patients are females, 11 (50%) of them are males. There are 15 (75%) females and 5 (25%) males in the control group. The mean age of the patient group is 57.45 ± 14.78 years; and the control group is 54.05 ± 11.93 years. Keratometry and pachymetry measurements are found to be significantly different in patient and control groups (p= 0.000 and p= 0.009 respectively). Refraction, axial length and IOP measurements are found to be similar in patient and control groups (p> 0.05). Refraction, keratometry and IOP measurements are similar in the diseased and and the other eye of the patients (p> 0.05).
Conclusion: Statistically significant no association was detected between refraction status, IOP and developing BRVO, which is a multifactorial retinal vascular obstructive disease. Keywords: Intraocular pressure; retinal vein occlusion; refraction, ocular; risk factorsTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:174-177
