Episcleritis And Scleritis

aGöz Hastalıkları AD, Marmara Üniversitesi, Tıp Fakültesi, İSTANBUL Inflammation of the outer segment of the eye includes a spectrum that ranges from simple episleritis to painful, sight-threatening, destructive necrotizing scleritis. The inflammatory process may also extend to adjacent ocular structures. Especially the necrotizing scleritis may be associated with potentially lethal systemic disorders. About 40 to 60% of patients with scleritis have evidence of an underlying infectious or rheumatic disease. The diagnosis of an associated infectious or rheumatic condition dictates the treatment. While infectious cases require treatment with antiviral or antibiotic agents, scleritis associated with immune-mediated systemic disease requires systemic immunosuppressive drugs. Keywords: Scleritis; connective tissue diseases; immunosuppressive agentsTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:192-203
