aGöz Hastalıkları AD, bPatoloji AD, Mustafa Kemal Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, HATAY Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of intraoperative mitomycin-C in treatment of ocular surface squamous cell carcinoma.
Material and Methods: A total of twelve patients, 7 men and 5 women, the age range of 53 to 77 years (mean: 65.9 ± 8.02 years), with lesions suspicious for corneal or conjunctival neoplasia, were operated on the date between September 2003 and July 2006. After excision of the tumor, mitomycin-C 0.02% was applied intraoperatively for 5 minutes. In two cases, excision was combined with conjunctival autograft transplantation. All excised lesions were underwent for histopathologic evaluation.
Results: The mean follow-up time was 18.2 ± 9.7 months (range, 3–31). Neither clinical recurrence of the lesions nor any side effects related to the intraoperative mitomycin-C usage were observed. Histopathologic study of all specimend indicated the presence of squamous cell carcinoma.
Conclusion: The excision of squamous cell carcinoma combined with the intraoperative use of mitomycin-C seems to be effective and safe method for treatment. To establish the efficacy of such an approach the longer follow up period and larger number of cases are needed. Keywords: Ocular surface, squamous cell neoplasia, mitomycin-CTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:217-221
