Material and Methods: Sixty-seven patients with high astigmatism as control group and 78 relatives of 20 patients with keratoconus were included in this study. The corneal topography and pachmetry of the family members were compared with that of a group of 67 control subjects without clinical evidence or a family history of keratoconus. The difference of the inferior cornea versus the superior cornea (I-S value), central corneal power and the corneal astigmatism derived from corneal topography, peripheral and central corneal thicknesses derived from ultrasonic pachymetry were evaluated. All the data were statistically analyzed with Student’s-t test.
Results: Statistically significant difference occurred between astigmatism group and the family members with respect of I-S value and peripheral pachymetry (p= 0.045, p= 0.01 respectively). However, there was no statistical difference with the respect of central corneal power, total corneal astigmatism and central pachymetry (p≥ 0.05).
Conclusion: Corneal topograhy and pachymetry are usefull methods for the early diagnosis of keratoconus and for the evaluation of the family members. On the basis of our results, we believe that genetical expression of keratoconus was more than reported in the literature before. Although some of the data of the topograhy and pachymetry support the idea of familial inheritence, it is hard to talk about an absolute hereditary transmission. Because our study did not include the genetical evaluation of the patients. Keywords: Corneal topography; family; heredity; keratoconusTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:234-238
