aGöz Hastalıkları ABD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Schlemm canal is a vein that provides the transporting of aqueous humour from trabecular meshwork to collector channels. Aqueous humour can be drainaged by conventional and uveascleral pathway. Ganglion cell damage can be reduced treatment of glaucoma. There are different treatment modalities like drugs, laser or surgery for each patient. Trabeculectomy is a gold standard of glaucoma surgery. Because of the exceeding complications of trabeculectomy, schlemm canal surgery is popular. Schlemm canal surgery includes trabeculotomy, non-penetrating glaucoma surgery, internal trabecular by-pass implants, external trabecular by-pass implants, canaloplasty, trabectome. We can classify the non-penetrating glaucoma surgery in three subgroups; viscocanalostomy, deep sclerectomy and deep sclerectomy with implants. Although late postoperative complications are similar in non-penetrating and filtrating surgery, intraoperative and early postoperative complications are less in non-penetrating surgery. In cases that have uncontrolled intraocular pressure although maximal anti-glaucomatous therapy and high complication risk in filtrating surgery, different glaucoma surgery techniques can be evaluated as alternatives to trabeculectomy. Keywords: Trabeculectomy; glaucomaTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:257-263
