Dr. Burcu A. KAHRAMAN,a Dr. Yonca A. AKOVAa
aGöz Hastalıkları ABD, Başkent Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic pathogens can cause oppurtunistic ocular infections in immunocompromised patients. Ocular symptoms may develop by direct involvement, hematogenous spread or hypersensitivity reactions and can be the first sign of systemic infection. Ocular infection can occur at any time and can be found in all segments of the eye including anterior and posterior segments. The infection can usually be diagnosed by clinical appearance, laboratory and microbiology investigations and with early diagnosis and treatment successful outcomes were obtained. Every patient under risk should undergo regular ophthalmic examination even without any complainment. Despite the early treatment, significant visual loss may occur especially in patients with the posterior segment infection. Keywords: Eye infections; immunocompromised host; acquired immunodeficiency syndromeTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2007, 16:264-271
