aGöz Hastalıkları ABD, Selçuk Üniversitesi Meram Tıp Fakültesi, KONYA Objective: To study the demographic pattern and indications for evisceration. Material and Methods: Records of patients who underwent evisceration at Selcuk University Meram Faculty of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology from January 2001 to December 2006 were reviewed. The parameters age and sex distributions, place of residence (urban/rural) and indications for eviscerations were evaluated. The etiology responsible for evisceration was determined on the basis of history, clinical examination and investigations as determined from previous records. Results: Forty five patients had one eye that was eviscerated during the approximately 6 years period. The mean age of the patients was 57.6±22.1 years (range 14 to 95 years). Trauma was the most common indication for evisceration (40%, n = 18), followed by absolute glaucoma (31.1%, n=14) and endophthalmitis (28.9%, n=13). Conclusion: Severe ocular injury and endophthalmitis are the major indications of evisceration. Eye injuries and endophthalmitis are considered to be largely preventable especially if adequate eye protection is used. These injuries and endophthalmitis cause a great loss on the country's resources. It is expected that with enforcement of preventive measures, many of these eyes can be saved from evisceration in the future. Keywords: Demography, etiology; eye eviscerationTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2008, 17:7-10
