Material and Methods: Thirty-seven patients who had bilateral medial rectus recession due to infantile esotropia before 24 months of age and were followed up for at least 3 years were evaluated retrospectively from 1988 through 2003. Preoperative and postoperative amounts of the angle of deviation, the number of surgical procedures, visual acuity and stereopsis of patients, and presence of inferior oblique muscle dysfunction (IOMD), nystagmus, or dissociated vertical deviation (DVD) were observed. Results: The mean age at initial examination was 14.25±6.54 (1-24) months and the mean follow-up was 6.13±2.34 (3-12) years. Mean angle of deviation was 33.51±10.92 PD preoperatively and 8.41±1.22 PD postoperatively. The mean number of operations was 1.63 per patient and 51.36% of patients did not need to have any additional surgery. Postoperatively, IOMD was documented in 43.2 percent of patients and DVD in 40.5 percent of patients. Preoperatively and postoperatively, latent nystagmus was present in the same 7 cases (18.91%). In 6 cases (16.21%), stereopsis was observed at the last visit. Conclusion: In the management of infantile esotropia, additional surgeries might be needed in the long term follow-up. Even good visual acuity, these cases might have poor stereopsis outcome. Keywords: Infantile esotropia, surgery, refraction, depth perceptionTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2008, 17:21-26
