Objective: To report on the clinical properties, treatment and follow-up results of patients with endophthalmitis referred to our institution within one year. Material and Methods: Chart review of 22 eyes of 21 patients was performed, which were referred to our clinic from other eye care centers, with a preliminary diagnosis of endophthalmitis. The past medical history and the type of surgery underwent at the referring clinic, the type of endopthalmitis (acute/chronic), the findings at onset and at the end of follow-up period and the medical and surgical treatment performed at our institution were evaluated. Results: Seventeen cases had postoperative endophthalmitis (13 eyes after phacoemulsification surgery and 4 eyes after large incision extracapsular cataract surgery) and 5 eyes had posttraumatic (secondary to perforating eye injury and reparation) endophthalmitis. Visual acuities of postoperative and posttraumatic endophthalmitis cases were similar at onset and at the end of follow up periods (P=0.613, P=1.00 respectively). Postoperative endophthalmitis cases were mainly in chronic form after both types of surgical procedures, that were arised 6 weeks after surgery at least. Conclusion: It is emphasized that careful follow-up of the cases is extremely important after cataract surgery since postoperative endophthalmitis cases those referrred to our clinic were mainly in chronic form. Posttraumatic endophthalmitis cases which were referred to our clinic have similar visual acuities at onset of the treatment with postoperative endophthalmitis cases and their visual acuities are found to be similar at the end of their treatment.
