aGöz Hastalıkları ABD, Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, İZMİR The aim of this study is to discuss epidemic keratoconjunctivitis which we have been facing more recently and mention the necessary precautions to be taken. Adenoviruses and associated clinical entities are discussed under the topics of acute nonspecific follicular conjunctivitis, pharyngoconjunctival fever, epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and chronic conjunctivitis along with important points which are usually overlooked in the diagnosis and management. A systematic approach to these points and resulting problems is described. Acute viral conjunctivitis and especially epidemic keratoconjunctivitis are important entities in the differential diagnosis of the red eye. Many times, the diagnosis can be overlooked in the heavy daily routine and insufficient precaution eventually causes a bigger problem which might have social and ethical aspects. In a patient who comes in with a red watery eye, increased light sensitivity but a fairly normal visual acuity, the diagnosis of epidemic keratokonjunctivitis should be considered. A history of contact with a person with similar complaints or an eye exam within the previous two weeks and preauricular lymphadenomegaly obviates the exact diagnosis. The patient should be given cool compresses and preservative-free artificial tears to relieve the symptoms. The main concern for the physician is to inform the patient well about the situation, and make necessary warnings and to prevent spread since the viral condition will be self-limited. Such a patient should be seen in a different room, with gloves if possible; avoiding manipulations like putting drops or checking intraocular pressure. Hands must be washed and the room and slit-lamp must be disinfected afterwards. Keywords: Adenovirüs, conjunctivitis;, viral eye infectionsTurkiye Klinikleri J Ophthalmol 2008, 17:43-50
